Colorless has two meanings.
Details[]
When a card is colorless, it means that the card, effect, or whatever it refers to is associated with Colorless mana produced by the Wastes basic land. This type of mana is denoted by the mana symbol.
This is not to be confused with Generic mana, which can be paid with any form of mana.
Cards that specifically created colorless mana (such as Sol Ring) now have text to display the new mana symbol. For example, Sol Ring was changed from ": Add to your mana pool" to ": Add to your mana pool".
Some of the first cards to require colorless mana were released in the Oath of the Gatewatch set, representing the Eldrazi.
