Johnny is used in contrast to Timmy, a nickname describing a player who enjoys impressive cards and crushing, decisive wins; and in contrast to Spike, a nickname describing a player whose enjoyment is derived primarily from competitiveness and winning.

Magic Research and Development staff make use of psychographic profiles—a list of attributes used to describe individuals' or groups of individuals' preferences and choices—to guide them in creating and selecting cards for publication. Johnny (last of the three profiles to be established), helped the staff describe players that would focus on exploring unique, interesting interactions between cards that the other profiles would find less interesting or fulfilling.
