Undergrowth is an ability word.
Details[]
It is an ability associated with the Golgari Swarm guild from Ravnica. Undergrowth works differently for each card that has it, but what each card with an Undergrowth ability has in common is that their Undergrowth abilities work better the more creature cards you have in your graveyard. A good example is Lotleth Giant, a creature card whose Undergrowth ability allows it to inflict direct damage to your opponent's life points upon entering the battlefield. Lotleth Giant's Undergrowth inflicts one point of damage to your opponent for each creature in your graveyard. Another good example is Necrotic Wound, an Instant card that inflicts -X/-X on a creature, where X is the number of Creature cards in your graveyard. What's more, if the creature targeted by Necrotic Wound dies on the turn Necrotic Wound was cast, that creature is exiled instead of being put in the graveyard, making it a good card to use against creatures like Reassembling Skeleton and Rekindling Phoenix.
Rulings[]
- Creature cards with other types, such as artifact creature cards, count for undergrowth abilities.
- Because tokens aren't cards, they never count for undergrowth abilities.
